As highlighted in the book "Beyond Training" by Ben Greenfield, CNS Tap Test provides a valuable tool for measuring the status of the central nervous system (CNS). This adaptation of the Finger Tap Test (FTT) or Finger Oscillation Test (FOT) is widely used in neuropsychology due to its simplicity, reliability, and ability to generate relevant data on fine motor control. It assesses motor speed, kinesthetic ability, and visual-motor coordination.

For athletes, it is recommended to use the CNS Tap Test regularly to establish a baseline. If the test result is elevated, it indicates suitability for maximum effort or heavy lifting. Conversely, a lower-than-average result may suggest CNS fatigue or potential issues like sickness, injury, or over-training.

Consistency is key when conducting the test. Use both hands and perform it in the same environment, ideally every morning upon waking. Follow these steps:

<ol>
 <li>Rest your hand palm down on a flat surface, with the heel of your hand supporting it.</li>
 <li>Tap with your index finger while keeping all other fingers on the flat surface.</li>
 <li>The timer starts recording with the first tap.</li>
 <li>No more taps will be accepted once the timer expires.</li>
 <li>You have the option to save or discard the results.</li>
</ol>

Multiple samples can be saved per day, allowing for tracking and analysis over time. The resulting data can be presented graphically, emailed, or managed directly within CNS Tap Test for improved accessibility and legibility through Swift Charts.
